Track 2 – Expanding Access, Openness and Flexibility

Negotiating Openness: Royal Roads Experience Designing a Graduate Program for a version of Open

At Royal Roads University in Canada Openness was adopted as a program goal. The program is predicated on the philosophical stance that openness and open educational practices facilitate collaboration and cultivate networked learning in its many forms as necessitated by the digital age. A research study was conducted on the experience of openness for students and faculty in a graduate program in Learning and Technology.

This session will present on how embodying this view of openness impacted the student learning experience and the experience of faculty. It will provide examples of ways in which the 5R’s of openness – retain, reuse, revise, remix and redistribute –have been applied at the program and course level.
